Gutter Guards vs. Cleaning: Which Is Worth It in New Jersey?

The NJ gutter reality
New Jersey gutters collect debris twice a year: oak tassels and maple seeds in late spring, then leaves in late fall. Homes under mature trees — common in Paramus, Englewood, and Clifton — can clog faster. When gutters back up, water overflows and damages fascia, soffit, and foundation.
Option 1: Professional cleaning
Cleaning twice a year is the minimum for most NJ homes. It is cheaper upfront than guards, but it never ends. It also requires ladder work, which is risky on two-story homes and steep roofs. Over five to ten years, the cost of repeated cleanings can exceed the cost of a good guard system.
Option 2: Gutter guards
Micro-mesh aluminum guards block fine debris while letting water through. They are the best fit for homes under oak, pine, or other heavy-canopy trees. Wide-slot covers and foam inserts are cheaper but tend to let small debris pass, which is exactly the debris North Jersey produces.

Which is worth it?
If your home has no overhanging trees and you are comfortable on a ladder, cleaning may be enough. If you live under a canopy, have a steep roof, or want to avoid ladder work, micro-mesh guards are usually the better long-term investment.
