Paramus masonry work is mostly about curb appeal and grade: paver walkways, front entry stoops with bluestone treads, seat walls, and outdoor kitchens. Paramus requires a construction permit for retaining walls above a set height and for any structure attached to the house, including new stoops, entry landings, and covered porches with masonry piers. Standalone paver patios generally don't need a permit unless they involve a wall or grading change that affects drainage toward a neighboring lot; the borough engineering department can require a drainage plan review on larger backyard hardscape projects. Curb cuts and driveway apron work in the right-of-way need separate sign-off.
Paver patios and walkways make up most Paramus jobs and price by square footage, base depth, and paver grade — a basic concrete paver job runs toward the low end while natural stone with a seat wall and lighting conduit runs well past the middle. Sloped-lot retaining wall systems with geogrid reinforcement add substantially to cost once wall height and backfill volume increase, which is common on Paramus's graded rear yards.

Often yes. If the base was compacted adequately we can lift, re-screed, and reset the affected area. If the pavers were laid on sand over undisturbed soil, it needs a proper base and full reset.
Usually a low one, to create the level pad. Built correctly it needs geogrid reinforcement and free-draining backfill so hydrostatic pressure never builds behind it.
Often yes. If the underlying base was compacted properly at installation, we can lift the affected pavers, add or regrade the base material, and reset them level — that's a partial repair, not a full rebuild. If the pavers were laid on sand over unprepared soil, which happens with cut-rate installs, the settling will keep recurring and the section needs a full base rebuild.
Typically not for a standalone patio at grade, but if the design includes a retaining wall over the borough's height threshold, or changes how water drains toward a neighboring property, it can trigger a review. We check the site plan and wall height before starting so the borough doesn't stop the job partway through.
If you want a fully level patio surface and the yard drops more than a few inches across its width, yes, some retaining structure is needed to cut into the grade. Built correctly with geogrid reinforcement, drainage stone, and weep openings, it lasts decades. Skipping it usually means a patio that's sloped, cracks at the low side, or a wall that eventually bows.
